Airborne 02.20.19: Kotnik Relieved, FAA Enforcement, Aero Charting

Also: Major Gift From Clay Lacy, Golden Knights Accident, A380 Deliveries To End, Blue Angels Suspension

The first female pilot to lead the F-16 Viper demonstration team has been relieved of command just two weeks after being named to the post.

Air Combat Command (ACC), director of public affairs Col. Allen Herritage said Capt. Kotnik was relieved on February 11, "due to a loss of confidence in her ability to lead and command the Air Combat Command F-16 Viper demonstration team. The Viper demonstration team is working to minimize impacts on scheduled performances and looks forward to inspiring crowds around the country during the upcoming season as soon as a new commander is selected.” The FAA has proposed revisions to the procedural rules governing its investigations and enforcement actions. The proposed revisions include updates to statutory and regulatory references, updates to agency organizational structure, elimination of inconsistencies, clarification of ambiguity, increases in efficiency, and improved readability. According to the document, the majority of the rules in part 13 were last amended a decade or more ago, such that part 13 requires updating. Eagle Cap Software has introduced Aerocharting; its solution for the hobbyist flier, the pilot who enjoys the hundred-dollar hamburger but doesn't like getting too techie. Aero Charting works on an iPad and provides a moving map with vector aeronautical charts. It also allows custom route creation and integration with a well-known Flight Planner. "We felt there was the need for a simple, easy-to-use situational awareness tool for pilots," said Brian Leutschaft, Product Manager for Aero Charting at Eagle Cap. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
