Honolulu Airport Tenants Getting The Attention Of The State DOT

Fines Being Levied On Some Non-Conforming Businesses Renting Hangars

Businesses using hangar space at Honolulu International Airport as self-storage units are seeing notices of fines arrive in the mail after years of lax enforcement by the state DOT.

The fines are reportedly normally between $25 and $100.

Television station KHON in Honolulu reports that the state is cracking down on businesses that are storing non-aeronautical equipment in hangars at the airport. The state says the move is to be sure the airport does not lose its eligibility for federal AIP and other grants.

Tenants are unsurprisingly not amused. Tenant Charlie Goodwin said the state should have come through, done an inspection, and ordered corrective action before just starting to hand out fines. He said businesses that haven't removed their non-aeronautical items from hangars after a reasonable period should have been fined.

Some of the tenants told the station they will pay the fines, while others vow to fight the state in court.
