CJ3 Flight Test Update

Cessna's so-new Citation CJ3 has successfully completed multiple milestones during the first three weeks of its flight test.

The CJ3 made Cessna history on April 17, 2003, when it took its first and second flights the same day. That, the company tells us, "...attests to the maturity of the CJ3's development and design."

The airplane logged 1.7 hours in its first flight and 1.4 hours in its second flight. Systems tested include the basic stability and control; operated the landing gear, flaps, speedbrakes and trim system; and evaluated engine operating characteristics and slow flight capabilities. To date, the CJ3 has made 5 flights and logged 8.7 hours.

You can learn a lot in 8.7 hours: Other recent accomplishments include confirmation of anticipated stall characteristics and airspeed calibration.

The (single-pilot-eligible) CJ3 offers a maximum cruise speed of 417 knots at 33,000 feet. With two pilots, full fuel, four passengers and baggage, the CJ3 offers an IFR range of 1,664 nm and a VFR range of 1,900 nm. Service ceiling is 45,000 feet and the maximum gross takeoff weight is 13,870 lbs. The time to climb directly to 45,000 feet at maximum gross takeoff weight is 35 minutes.
