Stolen 'Inverted Jenny' Stamp Appears At Auction

Vanished From A Collectors' Convention 60 Years Ago

A rare U.S. postage stamp that was stolen some 60 years ago turned up at a New York auction house earlier this month.

The "Inverted Jenny" stamp was among four stolen from a collectors' convention in the 1950s according to a report from Fox News. Two others have since been recovered. The third stamp was submitted to an auction house in New York, and authenticated.

The person who submitted the stamp, a man in his 20s from the U.K., said he inherited it from his grandfather and he knows very little about it.

The Pennsylvania-based philatelic library hopes that the recovery of this stamp can provide new insight as to who stole the four Inverted Jenny stamps 60 years ago. The stamp, with a face value of 24 cents printed to celebrate the start of air mail service in the U.S., is reportedly worth hundreds of thousands of dollars today.
