“Our mission is to go out and find the exact center of the storm and find how big the wind radius is and figure out what is going on in the storm environment. We then relay that information to the National Hurricane Center to improve their forecasts.”

Source: Capt. Garrett Black, 53rd WRS aerial reconnaissance weather officer, in details associated with the Air Force Reserve’s 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, aka the Hurricane Hunters, who flew 25 missions, from Aug. 25 to their last, Sept. 6, in support of Hurricane Dorian.
