LightSquared Shifts Frequencies, Wants To Try Again

Files With FCC For Approval Of Its Broadband Network

As LightSquared continues to work its way through bankruptcy, the wireless broadband company has petitioned the FCC for approval of a plan it says will resolve the interference issues with deployed GPS receivers. At the heart of the plan is a pledge to not use the frequencies that would cause the interference.

The company petitioned the FCC to modify its license application to allow it to use 5 MHz of spectrum that have not been part of the interference debate, and seeks to use an additional 5 MHz of bandwidth that it would share with the federal government, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. However, LightSquared has not given up completely on the so-called "upper" portion of the spectrum, but said it will wait until "operating parameters and revised rules for terrestrial use of this spectrum" are worked out. The company said it would cooperate in that endeavour.

The FCC said that it does not comment on pending matters.

In bankruptcy court, creditors which are owed more than a billion dollars have said the proceedings favor billionaire investor Philip Falcone and his Harbinger Capital Partners. But the judge said she is inclined to lean his way at least for the time being, and sources close to the proceedings said the lender's issues are "resolved."
