Around-The-World Pilot Forgot His Passport

Fortunately, It Was Found, And Jack Wiegand's Trip Can Continue

Maybe he should have included it on his checklist. Jack Wiegand, who is attempting to become the youngest pilot to circumnavigate the globe solo, landed in Canada Friday only to find that his passport was missing.

Wiegand, from Fresno, CA, had completed flights to Boulder, CO, St. Louis, MO, and New York City before heading across the border to Canada. But when he landed in Iqaluit, Canada northeast of Hudson Bay, and handed over his passport case, the 20-year-old pilot discovered it was empty.

The Fresno Bee reports that Wiegand searched his belongings in the airplane for several hours before starting to make calls to friends and family members in search of the passport, fearing it had been lost or worse, stolen. Finally, he remembered that he had been making copies of the document before leaving home in Fresno. His mother found the passport, face down on the glass in the copier.

The mistake cost him a couple of days in Canada while the passport was sent to him, and he was able to continue his trip. As this is written, he was near Vichy, France, South of Paris.
