Source: From a letter posted on the website of Flyi -- parent company to Washington, DC-based Independence Air -- announcing the airline's demise. Formerly a contract carrier for United and Delta as Atlantic Coast Airlines, Flyi becoming a stand-alone airline in July, 2004 -- becoming another player in the crowded low-cost carrier market along the east coast. While almost universally praised for its customer service (it was named one of Zagat's top five domestic carriers in 2005,) Independence executives said the business simply was never there.
