Piper PA-24 Comanche Down Near Miramar Saturday

Officials Report No Survivors Of Fiery Crash

A single-engine plane crashed and burned in a remote area of the Miramar Marine Corps Air Station on Saturday.

Officials said the aircraft was a Piper PA-24 Comanche, enroute from Whiteman Airport (WHP) in Pacoima, CA to Brown Field (SDM) in San Diego, CA, reported KESQ-3.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said the plane crashed at about 11 am in hilly terrain east of Interstate 15 and north of state Route 52, about eight miles northeast of San Diego's Montgomery Field (MYF).

Gregor said FAA controllers lost radar contact with the plane at about 10:55 am, but received no distress call from the pilot.

Although the name of the pilot has not been released, conflicting early reports indicate there may also have been passenger on board. The Comanche was registered to a Burbank, CA resident whose name was also not released. At this point it is unknown if the pilot of the crashed plane was the aircraft's owner.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
