Airborne 03.27.20: FAA Grounds Collings, OSH20 Update, Mars Rover Selfie

Also: COVID-19 Relief, SpaceX Rocket Motor Failure, Denver Metroplex Project, Etihad Cargo 787s

The FAA has issued an order immediately rescinding the authority it had granted to The Collings Foundation to conduct Living History flights in its classic WWII aircraft.

The FAA had granted such relief in Exemption No. 6540 and extended this relief for successive two year periods. The most recent exemption the FAA issued was Exemption No. 6540P, on March 22, 2018. This decision also denies the petitioner’s request for extension and amendment, submitted on August 29, 2019, and supplemented on November 8, 2019. With all of the aviation and other events that have been cancelled around the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the obvious question floating around the aviation community is 'what about Oshkosh?' So far, the EAA is planning to hold the event in July as scheduled. But as with everything connected with this crisis, the plans could change with very little notice. EAA released to the media an open letter to exhibitors from EAA chairman Jack Pelton explaining the process... "Today we are still planning on having the event beginning July 20, 2020.  In that context, I wanted to let people know how we’re approaching the planning process for AirVenture, and to help people understand the timetable as we sort through the ever-changing world events. NASA's Curiosity Mars rover recently set a record for the steepest terrain it's ever climbed, cresting the "Greenheugh Pediment," a broad sheet of rock that sits atop a hill. And before doing that, the rover took a selfie, capturing the scene just below Greenheugh. In front of the rover is a hole it drilled while sampling a bedrock target called "Hutton." The entire selfie is a 360-degree panorama stitched together from 86 images relayed to Earth. The selfie captures the rover about 11 feet below the point where it climbed onto the crumbling pediment. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
