Inuit Woman Becomes First Inuit Female Pilot For Inuit Airline

Was Greeted At Ceremony At Inukjuak, Quebec Airport

About 300 people were on hand to welcome Melissa Haney when she arrived at the Inukjuak, Que. airport last week.

But rather than riding in the cabin of the airplane, Haney was up front as the pilot of the Dash-8.

Haney has become one of only 14 Inuit pilots flying for Inuit Airlines, and is the first woman to earn that title.

The CBC reports that Haney began her career with the airline as a flight attendant, and on one trip sat in the jump seat next to the pilot. She determined then and there that she wanted to move into the pilot's seat.

The crowd of 300 watched as Haney landed the Dash-8 in her hometown for the first time. The landing was "flawless," according to Rhoda Kokkiapik, who organized the event.

The celebration included gifts and a cake. Haney said she was "super surprised" the people would come out to the airport to watch her land an airplane and celebrate her achievement.
