Mexican Airliner Lines Up On Wrong Runway At JFK

Was Approaching To Land As Another Aircraft Departing On The Same Runway

A Volaris airliner en route to New York's JFK airport lined up to land on the wrong runway while a Delta Airlines jet was taking off earlier this week, but Air Traffic Controllers caught the mistake and prevented a possible accident.

Television station WNBC reports that the Volaris airliner was cleared to land on Runway 13 Left at JFK, but instead lined up on 13 Right.

In a recording of ATC communications, controllers can be heard telling "Brickyard 4231" to "cancel takeoff plans." The Delta crew aborted the takeoff while controllers told the Volaris flight to go around.

A different controller is heard on the recording telling Volaris 880 they were "lined up on the wrong runway. Volaris 880, go around, turn left heading 100."

The Volaris crew executed the go around and then landed safely on the correct runway.

In a statement release Tuesday night, Volaris said: “The safety of our passengers and crew is our highest priority, and in accordance with our procedures Volaris will conduct an investigation to determine the factors that led to this event.”
