China, Antonov In Ukraine Hope To Restart AN-225 Production

Will Finish Incomplete Airplane That Has Been Sitting In A Hangar For 20 Years

An agreement has been signed between China and Antonov in Ukraine to restart production of the AN-225, recognized as the world's largest airplane.

In a short news release posted on the Antonov website, the company said it signed the agreement on August 30th with the Aerospace Industry Corporation of China (AICC).

The agreement has two phases. First will be to finish assembly of the second "modernized" AN−225 Mriya at Antonov Company and delivery of this aircraft to AICC.

The second stage involves organization of the joint series production of the AN−225 in China under licence of Antonov Company.

Both stages are subject to finalization of the necessary contracts.

The AN-225 was initially developed to transport the Russian Buran spaceplane, much as a Boeing 747 was modified to carry the U.S. space shuttle.
