UPS Pilots Re-Elect President, Secretary To Three-Year Terms

Overwhelming Support For Both Re-Elected Candidates

The Independent Pilots Association, which represents pilots flying for UPS, has re-elected its incumbent President, Captain Robert Travis and incumbent Secretary, Captain Thomas Kalfas to three-year terms. The IPA's Ballot Certification Board has certified the final election results.

The balloting shows the current IPA President, Capt. Robert Travis (pictured), receiving 1781 votes, or 91.43 percent of the ballots cast. Capt. Richard Derthick received 167 votes, or 8.57 percent. Incumbent Secretary Capt. Thomas Kalfas was the unanimous choice of those casing ballots

There were 2,417 eligible voters of which 1,952 cast a ballot representing 80.8 percent of the eligible voters. This 80.8 percent voter turnout is up from the last IPA election (2011 - 70.9 percent) and the last IPA Presidential election (2009 - 72.3 percent). The offices of President and Secretary comprise two positions of the five pilot IPA Executive Board. The remaining three positions are Vice President, Treasurer and At-Large Representative.

Travis is a 1985 graduate of UCLA with a degree in Political Science. He served as a pilot in the United States Air Force flying the F-111 and as an instructor pilot flying the T-38 Talon. He briefly flew the Boeing 727 for American Airlines before being hired by UPS in 1994. In his time at UPS, Capt. Travis has flown the Boeing 747, 757 and 767, the McDonnell-Douglas MD-11 and is currently serving as a Captain flying the Airbus A-300. Bob has served on various committees at the IPA. He began serving as Vice-President in January, 2011 and assumed the office of President in August of 2011. He resides in the Dallas, Texas area with his wife and son.

Kalfas is a 1983 graduate of the United States Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering. He served as a fighter pilot in the United States Navy flying the F-14 Tomcat and as an instructor pilot flying the TA-4 Skyhawk. Kalfas also flew the Douglas DC-9 for seven years while serving in the Naval Reserve, from which he retired in 2004. He briefly flew the Boeing 727 for TWA before being hired by UPS in early 1995. In his time at UPS, Kalfas has flown as a Flight Engineer on the Douglas DC-8 and as a First Officer on the Airbus A-300 and currently serves as a Captain on the A-300. He began serving as Secretary in January of 2010. He resides in Harrisburg, PA with his wife and children.
