Scuba Divers Discover Downed Airplane Off Florida Coast

Experts Say It May Be A Helldiver Resting Inverted In 185 Feet Of Water

A group of scuba divers on a Christmas Eve dive may have discovered the remains of a Curtiss SB2C Helldiver, but the identity of the aircraft has yet to be confirmed.

The divers were in about 185 feet of water four miles off the coast of Jupiter, FL Saturday when they discovered the airplane. They did not know it was there when they began the dive, but it was readily apparent when they got to the bottom.

Television station WPTV reports that that Emerald Charters owner Randy Jordan, who was one of the divers, said the boat captain selected a "random spot" for the dive. Video taken during the dive shows an airplane with its wing and vertical stabilizer largely intact inverted in the sand on the ocean floor. The divers said that the prop and engine were clearly visible in the wreckage.

Jordon sent the video to the Warbird Information Exchange, which said that the airplane might be a Helldiver. According to the station, no U.S. Military personnel have been out to look at the wreck.
