The FAA recently revived its $500 rebate program for ADS-B equipage with the the January 1, 2020 deadline only 14 months away.
AEA president and CEO Paula Derks told Aero-News Editor in Chief Jim Campbell at NBAA earlier this month that there is still some money in the rebate budget that has not been claimed. She said that there is still "quite a lag" between the number of airplanes that have installed the required equipment and the number of aircraft that will need to be equipped to fly legally in controlled airspace after January 1, 2020.
Derks reiterated that the FAA has no plans to extend the mandate deadline, and they are trying to do everything they can to prevent pilots and operators from being grounded when the mandate goes into effect.
Derks said that it is unlikely that the equipment is going to get any less expensive over the next 14 months, and the slots for installation appointments among AEA-affiliated repair stations are filling up rapidly. "I think it's just a sign of encouragement that we're serious, and get your slot now."
