FAA Pulls Plug On Journalism Schools' UAVs

Two Schools Lose Ability To Use Aircraft For News-Gathering Purposes

Two Midwestern journalism schools have had their wings clipped by the FAA ... as least when it comes to using unmanned ENG aircraft outdoors.

The University of Missouri-Columbia and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln have both been told by the FAA that they can no longer use their small UAVs for Electronic News Gathering (ENG). The two schools had been flying the aircraft to get aerial photos and video footage of news scenes that were otherwise difficult to access.

But the FAA says both schools need to keep the aircraft indoors, and ordered them to stop flying the aircraft outside, according to the Associated Press. In light of the order, Scott Pham of the University of Missouri-Columbia's KBIA-FM radio station said that the aircraft will be flown only indoors, and that the school may not apply for authorization to fly them outdoors even when the permits become available.
