AMA Drone Report 05.17.18: AMA Expo West Upgrades, UAS IPP, Amazon Snubbed

Also: Drones v Flaming Kites, Sherrif Drones, ALPA Is Watching..., Wichita Aviation Pathway

After a number of years in Ontario, California; the highly anticipated 2018 rendition of AMA Expo West will show up in new digs and a somewhat different time of the year. This year, the AMA Expo West team will appear this November 2-4, 2018 at the Fairplex Exposition Center, in  Pomona, California.

The new location allows for an extensive series of indoor and outdoor events, flights, races and demonstrations -- significantly broadening the scope and reach of the event -- including full scale flyovers, professional demos and some night flying offerings, to boot. DOT has selected 10 state, local and tribal governments as participants in the UAS Integration Pilot Program. First announced last October, this White House initiative partners the FAA with local, state and tribal governments, which then partner with private sector participants to safely explore the further integration of drone operations. “Data gathered from these pilot projects will form the basis of a new regulatory framework to safely integrate drones into our national airspace.” said Secretary Chao. One of the companies that hopes to be a major player in the drone delivery business was noticeably absent from the FAA's list of participants in the Drone Pilot Program announced last week. Amazon was left without a partner among the locations selected for testing that it is hoped will eventually lead to integration of UAS in the National Airspace. In a statement released to the media, Amazon vice president of Public Policy Brian Houseman said "While it’s unfortunate the applications we were involved with were not selected, we support the administration’s efforts to create a pilot program aimed at keeping America at the forefront of aviation and drone innovation.” All this -- and MORE in today's episode of the AMA Drone Report!!!
