Gone West: Retired AMA Executive Director Dave Mathewson

Flew His First Model Airplane At Age 8

Dave Mathewson, one of the mainstays of the Academy of Model Aeronautics who recently retired, has Gone West. AMA president Rich Hanson released the following statement concerning his passing:

"It is with great sadness that I share the news of Dave Mathewson’s passing on Sunday, October 21. Dave was an ardent modeler, he loved the hobby, loved AMA, and served the AMA community for many years.

"Dave served on the Executive Council as the District ll vice president for several years before serving as AMA president from 2008 to 2011, and was AMA’s executive director from 2011 until his retirement this past Spring. He was also a close friend to many of us, including me. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dave’s family and friends during this time of grieving.

"Like many of us, Dave’s interest in model aircraft began at a young age. He flew his first RC model aircraft with his father when he was just 8 years old, leading to his interest in becoming a full-scale pilot and his career in science and technology.

"We were all lucky to know and work with Dave. As many of you can attest, he had a passion for our beloved hobby, a tireless work ethic, and was always willing to help anyone in need. He will always be in our hearts as an AMA leader, lifelong modeler, and a true and loyal friend.

"Last spring, we honored Dave at his retirement banquet, where many of his friends, colleagues, and fellow fliers spoke about Dave’s commitment to our hobby and his many career accomplishments. We will share additional information regarding visitation services when they become available."

ANN sends our deepest condolences to his family and friends... of which there were so very many. We loved working with Dave and will miss him greatly. He truly was one of the best of us... -- Jim Campbell, ANN CEO/E-I-C
