China Shows Off Full-Size C919 Model

Full-Scale Mock Up At Zhuhai Air Show

China's state-owned Comac is showing off a full-sized model of its C919 single aisle airliner at the Zhuhai Air Show this week. China hopes the C919 will siphon off some of the single-aisle airliner business from Boeing and Airbus.

The 156 seat airliner is aimed directly at Boeing's 737 and the Airbus A320 aircraft. Boeing has projected that Chinese airlines will need to buy about 4,300 new airplanes in the next two decades to keep up with expanding demand. Fox News reports that it's not known if either Boeing or Airbus could ramp up to that kind of production schedule.

While the C919 is of Chinese design and will be produced domestically, companies such as Honeywell, GE, and Eaton are providing components for the aircraft.

While the C919 could provide some competition to the two major airliner manufacturers, don't look for it at an airline gate near you unless you live in China. Comac is producing the airplane strictly for domestic use.
