L-3 Lynx is 'Coming For You'

Lynx Is A One-Box Solution To Your ADS-B Mandate

By Tom Woodward

ADS-B, In, Out, Universal Access Transceiver, Extended Squitter? Is your mind spinning yet? What does it all mean? When do you have to be compliant? What will it cost? If you're like me you're putting it off for as long as you can and frankly, hoping it will all just go away. If you flying an airplane that you are barely keeping in the air by squeezing the family budget you are dreading, not only the cost of any additional avionics, but the cost to install them. What if you could get a bare bones box which would make you compliant and financially happy?

L-3 Aviation Products announced the upcoming launch of it's Lynx MultiLink Surveillance System at AirVenture on Monday. Details about the specifics of the product line (yes there will be several applications at different price points) are still being kept under wraps as they continue to test units in their company aircraft. "Our goal is to eliminate the guesswork and complexity inherent in ADS-B systems and introduce a one-box solution that meets the FAA ADS-B mandate, while going beyond what any other company is currently doing for NextGen flight," said Vice President of Marketing and Sales, Larry Riddle (pictured). The Lynx product will be available late in 2014 and will meet the budget of the General Aviation market, an area that L3 has overlooked in the past.

There will be four basic models that range from an ADS-B Out only system to a transponder form factor system. The most notable product will be the panel mounted NGT-9000. Simplicity of installation will reduce the cost you pay to your avionics shops. At the lower price point, starting below $2000, will be a remote unit that will make you compliant yet allow you to display some of the functions on your iPad or tablet. For example a Lynx cockpit display that features a Mode S transponder, traffic, weather, airport data base, map, wi-fi and hard wire display-out capabilities will cost about the same as you would pay for a Mode S transponder only.
