Skeptics Say Runway Margin Proposal Would Lead To Delays, Cancellations

Convenience... Or Safety?

A proposal by the Federal Aviation Administration to add a 15 percent safety margin to pilots' landing-distance calculations met with some concern from federal safety officials Wednesday, who question the impact the landing restrictions will have on air carriers.

The FAA says the proposal could prevent accidents like last December's fatal runway overrun at Chicago's Midway airport.

However, the Chicago Sun-Times reports airline officials fear the new rules may also force airlines to cancel or divert flights arriving at urban airports like Midway, particularly in poor weather conditions... and neither of those scenarios bodes well for travelers.

When asked by the National Transportation Safety Board, FAA officials acknowledged they had received some "pushback" from airline operators over the proposal.

The airlines may have been better off keeping quiet about the FAA proposal, however, as NTSB acting chief Mark Rosenker said his agency may recommend an even higher safety margin be enacted -- as the board's primary concern is for safety, not convenience.
