White House Reviewing New Proposed UAS Rules

Could Lead To Approval Of Flights Over People Not Directly Connected To The Flight

The FAA has sent a proposed rulemaking to the White House for review that would allow drones to be flown directly over people not connected with the operation of the aircraft.

Lisa Ellman and Patrick R. Rizzy write on the blog of the law firm Hogan Lovells that the rules have been sent to the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs. They say the development means that a proposed rule for small UAS flights over unsheltered people is "coming soon".

The rule could have a significant impact on drone use by first responders, law enforcement, and newsgathering agencies.

As part of the review process, members of the public and industry stakeholders can request a meeting with the agency to discuss the proposed rule, which will largely shape the parameters for the proposed rule.

The firm says that the review process represents the last realistic opportunity for the public and industry to influence the proposed rule before it is posted for public comment.
