Indian Mirage 2000 Down

Pilot Safe

An Indian Air Force pilot is reportedly okay after he ejected from his Mirage 2000 just moments before the aircraft went down in a forest.

India News reports the aircraft lost a portion of its landing gear shortly after take-off from Maharajpura airbase in Gwalior on what was described as a routine mission. The news service reports the pilot, identified only as Squadron Leader Gill, was ordered away from population centers in Gwalior and orbit to burn off fuel.

Gill was apparently single-minded in his determination to follow orders. He flew the Mirage 2000 (file photo of type, above) to the forests north of Madhya Pradesh and punched out the moment his fuel was exhausted.

Squadron Leader Mahesh Upasani said in New Delhi the jet was on a "practice interception mission" when it developed a snag in its undercarriage. "The pilot planned an ejection and carried it out safely," he said.

It was the second Mirage to go down in a week.Last Friday, a Venezuelan Air Force Mirage crashed near the El Libertador Air Base, 60 miles from Caraccas. In that incident, the pilot was killed.
