Airborne 08.28.17: C-17 Eclipsed, EVAS Smoke Protection, Spaceport America

Also: APL’s ‘Dragonfly’, BNA Solar Eclipse, AAAA v Privatization, A350 Emergency AD, Air Tractor, AUVSI, Viking 400 Twin Otters

An aircrew of reserve Airmen from Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina had the opportunity Aug. 21, 2017 to fly a routine C-17 Globemaster III training mission under not so routine conditions–flying in the path of a total solar eclipse.

During the standard training flight, the Air Force Reserve, comprised of 317th and 701st Airlift Squadron members, practiced “time on target” tactics as they traveled along the eclipse shadow’s path from just outside of Spartanburg, South Carolina back to Charleston. VisionSafe Corporation and Dassault Aviation have announced the approval of EVAS Cockpit Smoke Protection for installation on the Falcon 8X from the start of the line. VisionSafe’s Vice President Jonathan Parker, noted, “This is not just about the 8X, Dassault is expanding the Service Bulletin concept to include all the aircraft covered by the advisory and EVAS STC (7X, 8X, 900, 2000, and 50 series aircraft). Now any Falcon Jet operator will be able to either factory install EVAS on their new aircraft or have it streamlined with the service bulletin factory retrofit.” When ground was broken, and again when it opened, Spaceport America was hailed by its developers and the state of New Mexico as the only purpose-built commercial space launch facility in the country. But Virgin Galactic, which was the reason the facility was built, has still not fulfilled its promise of commercial spaceflights from the facility, and now some lawmakers and taxpayers are questioning their investment. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
