Austin, TX, City Council Greenlights Helicopter Purchase

Votes To Spend $2.6 Million On New Public Safety Aircraft

The Austin, TX, City Council voted Thursday to allocate $2.6 million to purchase a new police helicopter, and an additional $1 million to kit it out for public safety missions.

The new aircraft will join two already employed by the city, one of which was built in 1969. The Austin Statesman reports that the vote in the council was unanimous.

The newer of the departments two existing helicopters reportedly spends between 90 and 120 days on the ground each year due to maintenance requirements. Police chief Art Acevedo said he hopes the department will have its new aircraft by spring of next year.

The aircraft will be utilized in a dual capacity for police and fire missions, including water drop capability for wildfire suppression.
