Aero-TV: TCM's Rhett Ross -- There's A New Turbo In Town

TCM's Alternative Turbo For The SR22 Has The Industry Talking

A few weeks back, at the 2010 Cirrus Owner's and Pilot's Association annual convention, ANN had thew chance to get some additional details on the TCM alternative for the Turbo-charged SR22 series. While the Tornado Alley STC has gotten high marks from owners, TCM felt that it was time to offer an all Continental solution to a segment of the industry that has proven to be hard-flying and demanding aircraft operators.

The Teledyne Continental Motors (TCM) twin-turbocharged TSIO-550-K engine was co-developed via a unique partnership between engineers at TCM and Cirrus, and is not currently available in any other production aircraft (for now).

The TSIO550K is rated at 315 horsepower at 2500 rpm, twin-intercooled, cross-flow cylinder design and balanced induction system for improved performance and efficiency. TBO is 2000 hours.

Available already on new SR22s as the SR22T, an STC update kit is currently expected to be available by the end of the year...  The company has dubbed this retrofit the TR22 (Turbo Realized 22). The TR22 began as a technology demonstration aircraft for TCM's new Kinetic line of engines aimed at serving the kit and experimental aircraft market segment but quickly turned into a Supplemental Type Certificate Program.

Published TCM Performance Numbers:

TR22 Performance Climb Rate: 3000 ft MSL/130KIAS -- 1000 ft/min
Max Cruise Performance: 9000' 196 KTS, 35.8 GPH; 18000' 204 KTS, 18.7 GPH
Economy Cruise: 9000' 190 KTS, 16.5 GPH; 18000' 199 KTS, 16.2 GPH
