Tricky Landing for Student, Instructor in Katana

Road Construction Just What They Needed

Although there are plenty of folks in Miramar (FL) upset with the road-widening project that's part of the Pembroke Road growth, Khareem Madden, 20, and John Hannan, 21, aren't two of them.

When the 912S on their DA-20 Katana became unwilling to keep turning the prop (for as-yet unknown reasons) on Monday, Hannan, a commercial pilot student, and instructor Madden started looking around for that long clear stretch of ground, in the built-up (or, alternately, tree-covered) area over which they were flying.

As luck would have it, the road construction was just what they needed, provided they could get the nimble machine under some wires, and onto the relatively clear dirt near the construction site.

They fought successfully to miss the only reported traffic -- a lady with a 3-month-old boy in a stroller -- and parked the  plane in a cloud of settling dust. Witnesses say they got our pretty fast. Nobody was hurt.
