UAL Asks For More Time

Airline Wants To Extend Special Financing To End Of Year

The world's second-biggest airline says it needs more time to pay back $1 billion in special financing obtained since it declared bankruptcy almost 18 months ago.

United Airlines was supposed to have completed payments on the debtor-in-possession loans next month. Instead, it says it needs until the end of the year, as it continues to struggle with financial woes in the wake of its December, 2002, bankruptcy.

Still, United spokeswoman Jean Medina said the airline plans to emerge from bankruptcy around June 30th.

"This extension ensures that we have funding in place through the confirmation of our plan of reorganization," she said.

UAL had hoped to obtain $1.6 billion in loan guarantees from the government's Air Transportation Stabilization Board. That request, however, was initially turned down by the government. A second request is still pending.
