German Warbird Collection Remains Intact After Volker Schülke’s Passing

Hangar 10 to Remain in One Piece in Transfer to Karl F. Grimminger

A well known collection of vintage warbirds in Germany has secured a new home, thankfully in one piece after its sale to Munich entrepreneur Karl Grimminger.

The Hangar 10 collection was curated by owner Volker Schülke over the years, growing to include a handful of BF-109’s (and a couple Spanish derivatives, of course) and a Focke-Wulf 190. Schülke’s tragic passing in a 2020 accident had left the collection in limbo, but his widow Arite did the needful to ensure his cherished aircraft would be taken on as a continuing group of thematically consistent aircraft. The ending appears to be a happy one, for now, with the aircraft reportedly sticking around at their home in Usedom, Pomerania for the time being. Grimminger’s purchase adds them to his existing collection at Luftraum Süd in Baden-Württemberg. For now, he has said he intends to operate the collections separately on their own turf, with the Hangar 10 fleet possibly changing to “Air Traum Nord” in the near future. Grimminger’s collection of warbirds presale was a frequent fixture at ‘away’ events, when not on public display in their hangar at home.

The Hangar 10 collection includes a number of interwar and WWII single-engine aircraft, with a handful of Messerschmitts serving as the poster girls of the fleet. A Bf-108 and two Bf-109s were frequent fixtures alongside a frequent friend in many photos - a 2-seater BF-109 D-12 owned by the EADS Messerschmitt Foundation. While it wasn’t included in the sale itself, Gimminger got a few more toys with his purchase, like a Fieseler Fi-156 Storch, a Bückers Bu-131 Jungmann, a Bu-133 Jungmeister, and a Polikarpov Po-2.

“Hangar 10 is a project that is close to my heart. It has played a very important role for me and in the life of my entire family for many years,” said Arite Schülke, Volker’s Widow and his closest Hangar 10 accomplice over the years. “For me, however, it is now time to end this chapter in order to break new ground after my husband Volker Schülke’s accident.”
