Apache Down In Kosovo

Two US Peacekeepers Killed

US and NATO military officials are investigating the crash of an AH-64 Apache helicopter near Pristina in Kosovo. The helicopter was based at Camp Bondsteel, a peacekeeping encampment in the area.

Already, investigators say they don't believe the Apache fell victim to foul play. “There is no notification of a hostile intent,” Maj. Hilary Luton, spokeswoman for the American forces in Kosovo, said on Sunday. The military would not reveal the precise location or the circumstances surrounding the crash. Names of the two crewmembers killed are being withheld pending notification of their families.

American and NATO forces have been keeping the peace in Kosovo since 1999. after a NATO bombing campaign forced the Serbian government to stop its brutal crackdown on ethnic Albanians in the country. The international peacekeeping force of approximately 25,000 soldiers includes 2,500 US troops.
