American Ace Executed By Germans In WWII Repatriated To The U.S.

'The Ace Of Cleveland' To Be Buried With Full Military Honors Later This Month

The remains of Capt. Albert Schlegel, also known as "The Ace Of Cleveland, Ohio," will be repatriated to the United States and will be buried with full military honors later this month.

Stars and Stripes reports that Capt. Schlegel was shot down during a mission to strafe German ground targets in France in a P-51D aircraft when he was hit by anti-aircraft fire. It was first thought that he had been fatally injured when the airplane went down, but it was later discovered that he had been captured and almost immediately executed by the Germans.

Capt. Schlegel had been buried in an American cemetery in France. His remains showed evidence of a beating, and a bullet hole top of his head with a large exit wound at the back of his head.

Schlegel's casket will arrive in Savannah, GA on March 27. He will be buried March 30 in Beaufort National Cemetery in South Carolina.
