Airborne-UnCrewed 03.22.22: WA UAV Reg, Steadicopter Arms Up, Eve and GlobalX

Washington state has released its commercial drone registration system ahead of the April 1st program due date.

Those drone operators flying under 14 CFR Part 107 for compensation or hire are now required by law to register their UAVs with the Washington State Department of Transportation. The state hopes to make itself an attractive location, a hub for the uncrewed industry as a whole. Other states have looked to establish the same as they court the exciting new industry ahead of the projected proliferation of autonomous and uncrewed aircraft. Smart Shooter's SMASH system, unveiled last January, has found a new home in Steadicopter's Golden Eagle UAV. The Eagle has seen a proliferation of different subtypes, from pure electric to hybrid gas systems. This version combines the Black Eagle 50E RUAS with the SMASH Dragon system, allowing the carriage of small arms anywhere from the average rifle up to a 40mm grenade launcher. Using the company's artificial intelligence and software, the system can (or is supposed to, at least) autonomously identify and distinguish between a variety of targets regardless of their differing movement states. Global Crossing Airlines, or more stylistically, GlobalX, has secured a deal with Embraer's eVTOL subsidiary, EVE, for up to 200 of their upcoming aircraft. The sale brings Eve's total backlog up to almost 1,800 aircraft, expected to begin deliveries in 2026. The aircraft will go into service with GlobalX's charter fleet, serving customers alongside the company's roster of Airbus A320 and A321s. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne-UnCrewed!!!
