Duluth-Superior Aviation Sector Strong, State Says

Aviation Employment Has Grown 39 Percent Since 2007

A new report from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development shows that the aviation sector in the Duluth-Superior region has grown 39 percent since 2007.

The Prairie Business magazine online reports that, according to the information released by the state, aviation contributes $646 million to the regional economy, directly supporting 3,451 jobs. That's up from about 2,300 people working in at aviation and aerospace firms in 2007, the last time the market was surveyed.

Companies such as AAR and Cirrus are recruiting talent to fill numerous positions. AAR vice president Mark Ketterer said the company could hire 50 mechanics immediately. Cirrus says it anticipates a need for hundreds of new employees over the next five years.

The Northern Aero Alliance has been working with local schools as early as the elementary grades to introduce students to aviation at a very early age, according to the report.
