ICAO Condemns Ataturk Airport Attacks

Calls Actions 'Cowardly' On The Part Of The Terrorist

The leaders of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) have expressed their strong condemnation of Wednesday's terrorist bombings at Ataturk Airport, and their deep condolences for the families of the victims of the tragic assault.

The Council President and Secretary General of the UN agency expressed the aviation community’s solidarity with the people and Government of Turkey and the City of Istanbul, and their continued concern over the persistent willingness of terrorist groups to target international civil aviation facilities and operations.

“These attacks were an affront to the Turkish people and senseless in their targeting of innocent travellers,” remarked ICAO Council President Dr. Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu. “The civil aviation community works diligently with States to keep our global network and its billions of passengers safe from terrorist threats, and we are deeply saddened in the aftermath of these cowardly assaults.”

“Our hearts and sympathies today are with the victims and their families,” added ICAO Secretary General, Dr. Fang Liu. “ICAO is seeking practical and effective solutions for reinforcing landside security measures at airports.”

ICAO maintains international security provisions for both airside and landside terminal areas. These are currently undergoing review, and will be subject to final approval and adoption by ICAO’s 36-State governing Council.
