Air Canada Airbus Makes Serious Pass at 3400' Runway

Oops.

CBC News British Columbia reported this week that, in a "recent" event, an Air Canada Airbus crew nearly made a big mistake.

There were fires in the area, and a lot of botched-up airspace as a result. The heavily-forested area near Kelowna (BC) looks a lot like the heavily-forested area in nearby Vernon. The problem is, Vernon's runway is 3400 feet long. [Kelowna's is 7300 --ed.]

Anyway, CBC said a student and instructor using the Vernon airport noticed the Airbus coming on in: gear down, flaps extended... heading for the 3/4 mile runway. When it got to about 2200' AGL, the instructor noted, the jet sucked up its gear and flew away, landing, it turned out, uneventfully, at Kelowna.

Bill Yearwood, of Canada's Transportation Safety Board, said the fires in the area had crossed up the airspace around Kelowna so much that standard instrument approaches wouldn't work. It seems the ELS (Eyeball Landing System) hadn't been in operation long enough, either.
