Ryanair Bank Account Victim Of Chinese Hacker

Nearly $5 Million Fraudulently Removed From Airline's Account

A Chinese bank found a way to remove nearly $5 million from an account Ryanair uses to buy fuel for its aircraft, according to the airline.

"Ryanair confirms that it has investigated a fraudulent electronic transfer via a Chinese bank last week," the airline said in a statement.

Reuters reports that, according to the statement, "The airline has been working with its banks and the relevant authorities and understands that the funds – less than $5 million – have now been frozen. The airline expects these funds to be repaid shortly, and has taken steps to ensure that this type of transfer cannot recur."

The low-cost airline said it expected that the funds would be repaid soon, though a specific timeline was not given.

The newspaper The Irish Times said the fraudulent withdrawal was discovered last Friday. The Criminal Assets Bureau in Dublin has been asked to work with Chinese agencies to recover the money.
