Myrtle Beach Hi-Rise Stalled Over FAA Radar

Many Fear Development Will Block Approach Radar

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, literally wants to grow up. But developers' attempts to put high rises on the Atlantic shoreline are stalled right now because of the FAA's concern that they might block approach radar at the local airport.

The FAA decided two years ago to upgrade the local radar. Now... it's holding up construction of as many as eight high-rise condos and developers are paying big money to sit and wait.

Local officials and business leaders want more information from the FAA -- they'd like to see a government presentation on the radar situation.

If they don't get it... they worry that old conflicts between the city and Horrey County could flare up again... conflicts that center on management of Myrtle Beach International Airport and North Myrtle Beach... a facility that handles mostly GA traffic.
