Man Appears To Have Fallen From A Plane In South Florida

Pilot Made Distress Call After Losing A Passenger At 2,000 Feet

A man apparently fell or jumped from a Piper PA-46 airplane flying at 2,000 feet over the ocean near Tamiami Airport in FL Thursday.

The pilot of the airplane issued a Mayday alert about 1330 EST, according to the FAA. He told air traffic controllers that "I have a door ajar, and a passenger that fell down. I am six miles from Tamiami." The controller asks "So you said you had a passenger who fell out of your plane?" The pilot confirmed that the passenger had opened the back door of the plane and had "just fall down the plane."

Television station WTVJ in Miami reports that the plane landed safely at Tamiami Airport, and while homicide detectives were dispatched to the airport, there was no evidence of foul play in the incident.

Coast Guard and Miami SAR officials instigated a search for the man near Key Biscayne from air and on the water, but suspended the search at nightfall due to darkness and poor weather.  The search continued on Friday.
