Aero-News Plane of the Day (07.30.04)

LAF-01

Billed by its web site as the world's first sport-utility helicopter, the LAF-01 cuts a unique picture here at Oshkosh AirVenture.  Made of molded and composite materials allows rigid body construction and weight savings. The twin blades are also composite materials.

The engine can be automotive rated between 250 and 400HP. A certified aviation engine or a turboshaft engine can be used to power the LAF-01.

The electronic fuel injection means no manual mixture compensation. The engine's computer will automatically make the adjustments.

Using a 365HP LS6 V8, the estimated specifications are as follows Useful Load 1000 lbs Empty Weight 2000 lbs Fuel Capacity 32 Gal Cruise 100 MPH Price for Kit version $100,000.

A kit version and fully assembled version will be offered. The company estimates the kit version at 750 hours for assembly by a neophyte. The first kits should be delivered on summer 2005. The aircraft is not yet certified. It's still undergoing extensive testing.
