Vintage Culver Down In North Carolina

Pilot Fatally Injured In The Accident

A vintage Culver aircraft went down Saturday in Longview, NC. The accident resulted in the fatal injury of the pilot, who was the only person on board when the plane went down.

The Associated Press reports that, according to Catawba County Emergency Manager Karyn Yaussy, the plane was being flown by 81-year-old George Baxter Harris, who resides in the Hickory, NC area. The aircraft, a Culver PQ-14A, went down shortly after 1300 local time Saturday.

The FAA said that Harris conducting a local flight which originated at Hickory Regional Airport. He was reportedly returning to the airport when the accident occurred.

The plane went down about a mile from the airport, and impacted terrain near a local bank. There did not appear to be any damage to the bank building, according to television station WBTV.

Witnesses said that the pilot circled a field where several people were playing, and appeared to be considering landing on the field before breaking off and continuing towards the airport.
