Established by American electrical and sound-engineer Dr. Amar Bose in 1964, Framingham, Massachusetts-based Bose Corporation is an American manufacturer of audio equipment renowned for its up-market home audio systems, speakers, professional audio products, automobile sound systems, and noise-canceling headphones and aviation headsets.
The Bose Corporation’s majority owner is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), to which Amar Bose—an alumnus of the storied institution—bequeathed non-voting shares upon his 2013 death.
Bose has sold aviation headsets since 1989 and consumer headphones since 2000. The company’s current range of headphones/headsets includes over-ear, in-ear, aviation, and military models.
Development of Bose’s noise canceling headphones commenced in 1978 and was inspired by a commercial flight aboard which chairman Amar Bose donned a set of airline-supplied headphones and found noise from the aircraft’s engines precluded his enjoyment of the piped-in music the air-carrier provided its passengers.
In 1986, Bose and Sennheiser both presented Active Noise-Reduction (ANR) headsets for cockpit use. A prototype of Bose’s product was utilized by Rutan Voyager pilots Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager throughout the pair’s record-setting 1986 nonstop around-the-world flight.
On 28 March 2023, Bose released its A30 Aviation Headset. Unveiled at Lakeland, Florida’s SUN ‘n FUN Aerospace Expo, the A30 occasioned a completely new architecture featuring reduced clamping force, improved audio clarity, and a new digital active noise reduction system comprising three discrete modes of user-selectable noise cancellation germane to differing flight environments.
Bose senior product manager Matt Ruwe stated: “When we asked pilots what improvement was most important to them, their overwhelming response was comfort. We took that seriously and developed a new balance in the A30 with noticeably more comfort while maintaining and enhancing headset performance.”
The thoroughness with which the A30 meets Bose’s objectives is evinced by 35-year professional pilot and Boeing 737 and Gulfstream PIC Greg Delp, who set forth: “After using the A30 in the quieter cockpits of the most modern business jets as well as louder environments found in piston aircraft, I can say that Bose has once again set the standard for all other aviation headsets. The enhancements found in the A30 add up to superior comfort for even the longest intercontinental flights.”
