FAA Reviews Plan To Put Prison Near Airport

Spokesman: Colorado's Plan "Unprecedented"

If Pueblo (CO) has its way, there'll soon be a prison right next door to the city's airport. But that plan first has to be approved by an already dubious FAA.

FAA spokesman Allen Kenitzer calls the plan "unprecedented," saying that security at all airports has been stepped up in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. He points to the recent prison escape by a convicted sex offender and the riot at a prison in Crowley County (CO) last month as proof that prisons are inherently dangerous.

A nationwide search by KOAA-TV showed no prisons in such close proximity to an airport. If the prison is approved, construction could begin in October.
