And Now... The Rest Of The Story

Lost Door Finds Owner

We got this email from Kevin Belue in response to our story about an aircraft door that landed in a Hartselle (AL) woman's yard:

The item that fell on the house near Hartselle was the rear door from a Diamond Star DA-40.

Billy Baggett and I had just landed at MSL and the Diamond Star was right behind us. He said right after takeoff from Hartselle he heard a loud noise and turned around to see the rear door was missing from his plane. He didn't panic and flew back to MSL where he called Hartselle to see if anyone had seen a door fall out of the sky.

Sure enough, it had fallen on someone's house. They said the house and door were undamaged -- the plane looked undamaged as well. The hinges are made to separate if the door opens in flight. He's lucky it didn't hit the tail because that plane has a T-tail. He said the door had come off with the first owner as well.

(Thanks Kevin! -- ed.)
