New Control Tower Planned At Piedmont Triad Airport

Contract Award Expected Sometime In 2018

The FAA is planning to build a new control tower at Piedmont Triad International Airport (KGSO) in Greensboro, NC, but don't look for construction to begin anytime soon.

The existing tower was built in the 1970s, according to Kevin Baker, executive director at KGSO, and it has gotten somewhat cramped as new equipment has been installed to modernize operations.

Baker told Time Warner Cable News that the new tower will be taller than the existing 85-foot structure to allow for increased lines of sight around the airport, and into industrial areas slated for development around the airport.

The new facility is currently in the design phase, and is expected to cost some $42 million. A contract for the construction will likely be awarded sometine in 2018, with the new tower becoming operational in 2023 ... at which time the old facility will be demolished.
