Two Fatally Injured In CRJ-200 Accident

Plane Was Carrying Mail When It Went Down In Sweden

A CRJ-200 belonging to West Atlantic in Europe went down last Thursday in Swedish Lapland, resulting in the fatal injury of the crew of two on board. The plane was carrying mail from Gardermoen in Norway to Tromsø when the accident occurred.

According to the online news site The Local SE, The crew issued a distress call before the plane went down about 11:30 local time Thursday night. The Norwegian Air Force searched the area, but by Friday, Swedish emergency services had suspended the search for any surivors after locating the wreckage.

According to West Atlantic, the crew had a total of about 6,000 flight hours between them. The captain was 42 years old and from Spain, while the first officer was a 34-year-old citizen of France.

The wreckage was located by a Norwegian Air Force F-16 between the Norwegian border and the northwestern edge of  lake Akkajaure in Sweden in the Swedish Alps.

The Bombardier CRJ-200 was manufactured in 1993 and was of Swedish registry. West Atlantic CEO Gustaf Thureborn said in a news conference that the plane often traveled between destinations in Norway.
