AMA Drone Report 01.24.19: AMA Responds, FAA UAS Symposium, DJI Urges Caution

Also: New Canada Rules, DJI Investigating, Police Drones, AMA Expo East 2019

The FAA published a notice of proposed rulemaking on the Operation of Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems over People and an advance notice of proposed rulemaking on Safe and Secure Operations of sUAS, recently.

AMA’s Executive Director, Chad Budreau, commented... “The proposed rulemakings on flying over people, night flying, and safe and secure operations are a step toward opening up the airspace for more commercial UAS operators. For model aircraft hobbyists, however, we do not anticipate these rules will have a significant impact on our existing guidelines for safe and responsible operation. Model aircraft flights over people are currently not allowed under AMA’s community-based safety guidelines. We believe this is a sound and proven safety guideline for all recreational UAS operators..." In light of a number of events and programs being curtailed due to the long-term government shutdown, it should come to no surprise that the stalemate is affecting the unmanned aviation community in a number of ways. The much anticipated FAA UAS Symposium 2019 that was scheduled to take place in February is being postponed due to the government shutdown. The new conference dates will be announced after furloughed FAA employees return to work. DJI is monitoring recent reports of drones flying in close proximity to various airports, and has offered assistance to investigators and airports where these sightings have occurred. To date, none of these reports have been confirmed, and there is no proof that any of these alleged incidents occurred. Despite the lack of evidence, new sightings have been reported at more airports, raising the prospect that new reports are being spurred by publicity from past incidents. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of the AMA Drone Report!!!
