Polish Deputy Defense Minister Lashes Back At Airbus

Says Poland 'Taught The French To Use A Fork'

Poland's Deputy Defence Minister Bartosz Kownacki has lashed out at France and Airbus following statements from the European aircraft manufacturer on the loss of a 50 helicopter deal for the country.

Kownacki said in a televised statement that France lacked "class" after losing the deal to build 50 Caracal helicopters for Poland. "They are a people who learned to eat with a fork from us a few centuries ago. So maybe this is why they are behaving in this way now," he said, according to a report from the BBC.

A spokeswoman for the Law and Justice party in Poland called the remarks "unfortunate".

Poland will buy U.S.-built Black Hawk helicopters instead of the Airbus aircraft. Airbus has reportedly threatened a lawsuit in the matter.

Some members of Poland's opposition Civic Platform party called for Kownacki to be fired.

The Civic Platform party had made the deal with Airbus, which was scrapped after the Law and Justice party took power last November.
