Austin, TX Police Department Seeks New Helicopter

Hopes City Council Will Approve $3.7 Million Purchase

The Austin, TX Police department says it needs a new helicopter, and hopes the city council will approve spending $3.7 million on a 2012 Eurocopter to add to its 2-helo fleet.

Your News Now online reports that the APD currently flies a helicopter manufactured in 2001, and one from the Vietnam-era. In making its case to the city, the APD said the purchase of a new aircraft would allow them to have two in the air while leaving the military surplus helo grounded.

The APD has its eye on  a new helo with state-of-the-art law enforcement technology, as well as fire-fighting capability.

Television station KVUE reports that operating costs for the two existing helos runs about $450 per hour. The aircraft make approximately 120 calls per month.

They have asked the council to write a letter of intent which would reserve a production slot for the helicopter. If it is approved at the council's meeting June 28th, it would be take at least a year, and probably more, before it is delivered.
