Another Helicopter In The East River

Crash Eerily Close To Tuesday's; No Word On Casualties Yet

ANN REAL TIME NEWS: 2000 EDT -- A helicopter crashed into the East River Friday, the second time in four days such an accident occurred -- very close to the same place.

The East River is the branch of the Hudson that passes east of Manhattan Island, off lower Manhattan, in the most iconic area of Downtown New York. The helicopter plunged into the river just off 42nd Street and sank within a minute. There are several helipads, mostly private, in the area.

This machine was the second helicopter to go into the river in the span of only four days. (One passenger remains hospitalized from the Tuesday crash of a sightseeing helicopter).

Friday, six people were on board the aircraft (type as yet unknown) when it went down. Early reports gave no indication of the owner or the nature of the passengers on board. Most reports indicate that all were rescued by bystanders, boaters, and themselves, before first responders arrived.

Firefighters, police and emergency management specialists are at the scene. Divers are going down to the wreck, which is in shallow water.
